Strictly physiognomic portraits are for me the geometry of figurative painting, especially when expressiveness reaches the heights of artistic expectations. Between the willful nonchalance of setting up the center of attention and the unintentional redundancies, the face can be the most valuable measure of a model’s personality for the viewer. And even if the elements I use are largely the same, the final effect can take on unexpected configurations or interpretations.
It depends on what you want to see.
